Developmental Characteristics 

 

 


 

Physical

·          Assembles simple parts that require minimal mechanical skills (puzzles, toys)

·          Builds using simple building blocks, color blocks and construction toys.  Shows imagination

·          Draws (copies) a circle, straight line, slanted line

·          Stacks blocks eight high in imitation of one teacher does

·          Jumps in place on both feet on command or in imitation

·          Walks down stairs one step per tread

·          Balances on one foot for one second

·          Throws ball purposely overhand.  Distance, direction and accuracy unessential but should be more than grossly random

·          Is toilet-trained.  Exercises bladder and bowel control

·          Uses toilet alone.  Cares for self at toilet (papering), pulls up and down own clothes, but may require help to fasten clothing

·          Puts on coat or dresses with help on hard parts especially buttoning

·          Puts on shoes & socks (verbal directions permitted).  May need help tying

·          Feeds alone.  Uses drinking utensil and spoon or fork appropriately; often butters bread with knife

·          Washes and dries hands acceptable, unaided

·          Tries to catch a large ball

·          Kicks a ball forward

·          Hops on one foot

·          Walks short distances on tiptoes

·          Climbs up and down a small slide by self

·          Pedals a tricycle

·          Walks on a line

·          Jumps over 6” barrier

·          Interested in handling food and cooking procedures

·          Notices differences in boys & girls

 

Social/Emotional

·          Seek attention and approval of adults

·          Sometimes shows preference for one parent (often the parent of the opposite sex)

·          Accepts suggestions and follows simple directions

·          Enjoys helping with simple household tasks

·          Can make simple choices between two things

·          Enjoys making others laugh and being silly

·          Spends a great deal of time watching and observing

·          Enjoys playing with other children briefly, but still does not cooperate or share well

·          Enjoys hearing stories about self

 

 

 

Social/Emotional Cont.

·          Enjoys playing “house”

·          Enjoys imitating other children and adults

·          Answers whether he is a boy or a girl

·          Expresses interest in ethnic identities of self and others if exposed to a multicultural setting

·          Plays singly with sustained interest alongside, or among other children, adults, pets or belongings with little disturbances or disturbing

·          Knows and understands own sex and identifies adult roles of men and women

·          Shares adults with other children

·          Attempt to conform to rules

·          Proud of accomplishments

·          Independent (leaves mother comfortably)

·          Use proper pronoun when referring to self

·          Can show self-control, but resorts to temper tantrums when angry

·          Likes to hear own voice

·          Responds to verbal guidance

·          Have imaginary friends

 

Cognitive/Intellectual

·          Compares sizes, extends matching concept to big, little, etc

·          Counts to three, extends concept of counting to three, can identify three pieces of counters, teddy bears, etc.

·          Dramatizes, act-out singly, or with others simple stories, Mother Goose Rhymes, and characters and scenes

·          Uses plural in conversation and language

·          Identifies self by name

·          Identifies teacher by name

·          Converses in short sentences, gives information, repeats, uses language to convey simple ideas

·          Describes what is happening in a picture (The baby’s sleeping.).  Uses a complete sentence

·          Rote count to ten

·          Talks so that 75 to 80% of speech is understandable

·          Talks in complete sentences of 3 to 5 words “Mommy is drinking juice” or “There’s a big dog.”

·          Stumbles over words sometimes – usually not a sign of stuttering

·          Enjoys repeating words and sounds

·          Listens attentively to short stories and books

·          Likes familiar stories told without any changes in words

·          Enjoys listening to stories and repeating simple rhymes

 

Cognitive/Intellectual Cont.

·          Able to tell simple stories from picture or book

·          Enjoys singing and can carry a simple tune

·          Understands “now, sooner, and later”

·          Asks who, what, where, and why questions

·          Stacks 5 to 7 blocks

·          Enjoys playing with clay or play dough (pounds, rolls, and squeezes it)

·          Can put together a 6 piece puzzle

·          Draws a circle and square

·          Recognizes everyday common sounds

·          Matches an object to a picture of that object

·          Can solve problems if they are simple, concrete, real and immediate and if wants to

·          Interested in similarities and differences

·          Can distinguish, match and name colors

·          Interested in features of animals that make them unique

·          Has good self-knowledge; can understand difference between self and younger children but not between self and older children

·          Can say his age

 

Spiritual

·          Associates “God or Jesus loves you” with warm feelings from parents and other care-givers

·          Senses others are happy when they talk to God

·          Recognizes that Jesus was a baby, a boy, and then a man

·          Recognizes that the Bible is a special book that has stories about God and Jesus

·          Recognizes that at church there are people who sing and talk about God and Jesus

·          Can identify some Bible characters & stories

·          Enjoys singing Bible songs

·          Understands that God, Jesus, the Bible and Church are special

·          Begins to develop moral conscience and understand consequences of behavior
