Text Box: The Discipline Connection by Matti Friedt
Text Box: Think about a time you entered into a new environment and were greeted with a smile and an open hand. How did you feel? Did you want to stay? Did your anxiety level increase or decrease? Do you want to return?
Home is the first place children learn hospitality. Any guest—grandparent, babysitter, friend, service provider—feels warmth or rejection as he or she crosses the threshold. Our children watch how their adults treat visitors. What they see and hear adults doing and saying is the biggest clue as to what they Text Box: should do and say. Our gracious hospitality helps the children develop a bond of dignity and respect with those who come into our home. Look at the follow statements. Reflect on how you can provide a hospitable environment and meet your goals for development character within your children.
How can we show hospitality?
Call visitors by name when they first enter the home.
Warmly acknowledge all guests.
Smile!
Text Box: Listen to the words and listen for the heart of your guest. Give your attention.
Be open about your affections and show it in a Godly manner.
Laugh!
Listen to your tone of voice. Is it warm and welcoming?
Smile! It bears repeating.
Say good-bye as if you want them to return, not as if you are glad they are gone!
