Text Box: I met some of my very best friends at the “Mommy and Me” classes held at the hospital where my daughters were born. After they graduated the class at six months, we formed our own play group. Once a week we would meet for an hour and a half to fellowship with one another and let the kids play with one another. After all, we did have some significant things in common! This built strong friendships among the mommies, and also provided valuable socialization time for our children. Consider hosting shared play dates in your home with little ones the same age as your child. Hebrews 13:3 tells us, “Do not be forgetful of hospitality, for by this some have entertained angels without knowing it.”
When babies get together to socialize, be sure to have a clean floor or play mat so they are free to roll, Text Box: crawl, roam, and do all those neat tricks you can’t wait for others to see. Get down on your hands and knees to ensure you have blocked off any unsafe areas like phone cords, electrical outlet plugs, dangerous pets or poisonous plants. Have a variety of clean toys available. Be sure to disinfect them before and after playtime. Anything small enough to fit in an empty toilet paper roll is a potential choking hazard for young babies.
If babies are old enough to eat snacks, serve Cheerios, cut-up cheese, or small pieces of fruit along with some refreshing water or all natural fruit juice. Sharing a meal with friends always seems to bring people closer together. To set a soothing tone, play classical music or lullabies softly in the background. Text Box: Pick a short book with colorful pictures to read aloud. Remember to take pictures of your babies with their playmates. They will have a blast looking at them in a few years.
Last but not least, keep visits short and sweet so you don’t run into nap time. You will enjoy entertaining so much, you won’t want to end that time together! Be sure to clearly state the end time to all your guests, so you don’t forget your own baby’s needs. You will have so much fun teaching your child to be hospitable while you are making lifelong friends for the entire family. Who knows, you may end up entertaining a few angels!
