On February 17,
1918, Lois "Olean" Fischer Lowe was born in Booneville, Alabama.
She came to
Pensacola as a teenager, working at the soda fountain at Newberry's,
where she met the love of her life, Clarence Lowe.
He always said "he
found a million dollar baby in a five and dime store".
He was a Navy
pilot, stationed at Pensacola NAS. They married on July 17, 1940, and
shortly afterward, Clarence was sent to Kaneohe Naval Air Station in
Hawaii.
They were
expecting twins at the time, and the girls, Lois Carolyn and Linda
Olean, were born on May 20, 1941.
Olean embarked on
an overseas trip on the steamer the "S.S. Lurline" to take their girls
to be with Clarence in Hawaii.
In December, the
family found themselves in the middle of the attack on Pearl Harbor and
Hawaii.
Olean has
always told her children and grandchildren how she was able to see the
Japanese Pilots, faces as they flew above the house during the attack.
After the war,
their son Louis Richard was born in 1944, within the brick wall of the
Naval Hospital at Pensacola NAS.
They were very
involved with Warrington Baptist Church, where Olean taught Sunday
school classes, vacation bible school, belonged to the WMU, and served
many good meals there.
They were married
for 66 years, until Clarence's death in 2006, at the age of 91.
She will always be
remembered as a very refined and dignified, very classy lady indeed.
She passed
away at the age of 91, at the same Navy Hospital where she told her
"sweetheart" goodbye almost 3 years ago.
They are now
reunited in heaven, in the presence of the Lord.
Meme is survived by her 3 children, Lois Smith and husband E.B., Linda
Leech and husband Marvin, Louis Lowe and wife Kathleen.
They have 5
grandchildren, Sheri Kennedy and husband Kevin, Kyle Leech and wife
Jill, Kim Martindale and husband Trey, Keith Leech and wife Julie, and
Christi Miller and husband Mike.
She had 12
great grandchildren, including her newest arrival, Kailee Miller, who
arrived just in time to meet her great grandmother.
She is also
survived by one nephew Terry Sears & wife Mary.
Olean will be
missed by many, but she is finally back with her sweetheart.
Visitation will be held at Warrington Baptist Church beginning at 10:00
A.M. with Funeral services immediately following at 11:15 A.M.
She will be buried
next to Clarence in Barrancas National Cemetery on the Pensacola Naval
Air Station.
