Mabel Kirkland 1924-2011
Mabel Irene McLeod Kirkland, age 86, passed away peacefully with her daughter Amy at her side in Thomasville, Ga on January
12, 2011. She was born July 6, 1924 in Mobile, Alabama, the second of five children to Julia Ella Allen McLeod and Peter Archie
McLeod, Sr. Eventually the family moved to Pensacola where she graduated from Pensacola High School. Following graduation
from Perkinston Jr. College in Mississippi. She returned to Pensacola and began her Federal Civil Service career. It was there
that she met Thomas J. Kirkland her co-worker and the love of her life. They were married November 5th of 1949. On September
8, 1950 they welcomed their first daughter Mary Ellen and on June 13, 1954 added daughter Amy Irene to the family. Upon their
civil service retirement she and "Kirk" enjoyed searching for antiques, and helping friends, family and neighbors but most
important offering unending support and love in whatever endeavors there two daughters were up to. They enjoyed each others
company till he passed away October 8, 2002. She had missed him dearly since that time.
In addition to her parents, and husband she was predeceased by two brothers David Anderson McLeod and Peter Archie
McLeod, Jr., nephews Larry Bruce McLeod, Peter Archie McLeod 3rd and Mark Edward McLeod. In addition to her daughters
Mary Ellen and Amy (William Lawrence) she is survived by her sister Mildred McLeod Fillingim and brother Herbert Allen McLeod,
many nieces and nephews and their families.
She was able to maintain her independence and reside in her family home after her husbands death with the help of special
friends and neighbors Cassie Knight, Sandy Curry and Phyllis Lewis. In her final years she resided at Plantation Manor
(Thomasville, Ga) close to her daughter Amy. She was lovingly cared for by the staff of the Gracious Living unit.
Visitation at Oak Lawn Funeral Home will begin at 12:30 on Sunday January 16, 2011 with a 2 pm service conducted by long time
family pastor, Reverend Alton Butler and long time family friend, Reverend Jimmy Savage. There will be a graveside service
immediately following at Bayview Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers please contribute or support your favorite charity.
