Robert Kilpatrick 1922-2011
Robert Denmark Kilpatrick : The Country is in mourning for a hero passed 25
August 2011. Robert was born to Walter and Bobbie Lee Kilpatrick, 30
September 1922, in Andalusia, Alabama. Married to Mavis Adams on February
14, 1946, they had a beautiful baby girl Robin.
She met and married Captain Martin P. Smith, USN (ret). This union produced
three wonderful grandchildren Sean, Matthew and Rebecca. They were the joy of
his life and his favorite pastime. The Smith family resides in Fleming Island,
Florida where Robert spent his last 4 months with them.
Robert joined the Alabama National guard in 1938 and was called to active duty
reporting to Camp Blanding Florida 1940. He volunteered for duty as a
paratrooper and following training at Fort Bragg, North Carolina was assigned to
the 82cd Airborne Division, 504th Parachute Infantry, 2nd Battalion, Echo
Company. He entered the war in the Invasion of North Africa and was engaged in
Sicily, Italy, Normandy, Holland and Germany, received two purple hearts,
awarded the Bronze Star and numerous Theater and Unit citations. He often
commented that once deployed, he never again slept indoors until the end of the
war. He was a true member of the "Greatest Generation".
Following his discharge in July 1945, he returned home married Mavis and
worked many years as a sheet metal and airframe mechanic both in Mobile and
Pensacola, Fl and retired from the Civil Service in August of 1980.
He was widowed in January of 2011. His is survived by Robin and her family
members, sisters, Sybil Cooper, and Sara Norris and numerous nieces, nephews
and in-laws.
He will always be remembered by his family and extended family members as a
generous, kind and selfless individual. No request was to great, no task was too
hard, he was always willing to help. He will forever be fondly remembered and
missed greatly.
Funeral services will be conducted at 12p.m. Monday August 29, 2011 at the
Oak Lawn Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Barrancas Natinal
Cemetery.
The family will receive friends one hour before services Monday at the funeral
home.
