Buford F. "Bud" Harmon of Pensacola died
Thursday, July 27, 2006, following a lengthy illness. Bud was born on
September 4, 1918, in Randolph County, Alabama. He served in the
Civilian Conservation Corps, CCC, and in the U.S. Merchant Marine on Sun
Oil Co. gasoline tankers in the 1930s. During World War II Mr. Harmon
served in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in Pensacola where he met his
beloved wife of 60 years Vera Tabb who preceded him in death. After
their wedding in 1944, they moved to Myrtle Grove where they were very
active members of the Myrtle Grove Baptist Church for over 50 years. Bud
served on many different committees as well as taught an adult men's
Sunday School class. He was most proud of his years serving as the
Church Sunday School Superintendent, Chairman of the Church Building
Committee, and Chairman of the Church Deacons.
Mr. Harmon's 30-year career at the Pensacola Naval Air Station began as
an Aircraft Instrument Mechanic apprentice at the Overhaul and Repair
Facility in 1948. He retired as a Mechanical Engineering Technician at
the Naval Air Rework Facility in 1976.
He is survived by his son Frank (Val), Gulf Breeze; his brother Clarence
(Genetta) Harmon, Valley, Alabama; his grandchildren, Kay (John) Groth,
Michelle Harmon, and Andy Harmon; three great grandchildren, Natalie,
Kelly, and Matthew; his special nephew Ray Colemon (Frances), Tucker,
Georgia; and many other beloved nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, August 2, 2006, at 10:00 a.m.,
at the Myrtle Grove Baptist Church with Pastor Ron Lentine and Dr. Alton
Butler officiating. Burial will follow at Pensacola Memorial Gardens.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home, 619 New Warrington Rd., Pensacola, FL, 32506, is
in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at the
funeral home on Tuesday, August 1, 2006, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Andy Harmon, Steve Balon, Mike Tabb, Freddie Lepley,
Chris Lepley, Vera Lepley, Deckie Jeffers, and Steven Jeffers. Honorary
Pallbearers are Jim Whatley, Hines McNair, Ken Richmond, Ivan Sarver,
Robert Horn, Paul Bailey, Mitch Davis, Lowell Cooper, and Hank Martin.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Myrtle Grove
Baptist Church or a charity of choice
