Harry Alexander Dunlap, Jr. passed on
May 30, 2010.
He
was born on May 6, 1924 in Louisville,
KY. As a youth, he moved several times,
ending up in Shreveport, LA, where he
attended and graduated from C.E. Byrd
High School in May 1941.
After
a second short stay in Jacksonville, FL,
he moved to Pensacola, FL, where he
decided to join the Navy on August 2,
1941 on a 'Kiddie Cruise" (17 years
old).
Military conduct came easy to him, as he
was involved in ROTC while in high
school.
Then
came December 7, 1941, and he was
launched into a 30 year career, retiring
on September 1, 1971.
While stationed at NAS Pensacola in
1943, he met and married a Pensacola
girl, Annie Laurie Reynolds.
He
was 19, and she was barely 17.
After
a short engagement, they married on
September 7, 1943, and lived very
happily thereafter for over 66 years.
The
romance never went out of their lives.
They had four children, three sons:
Harry A. Dunlap, III and Richard T.
Dunlap of Pensacola, FL, William A.
Dunlap and his wife, Sheila, of
Beattyville, KY, and one daughter:
Gloria Ann Kerslake and her husband,
Douglas, of Norfolk, VA.
Harry was preceded in death by his
parents, Harry A and Beulah (Smith)
Dunlap; his sister, Bonnie Moore,
formally of Pensacola, FL; and eldest
son, Harry A Dunlap, III (2007).
Along
his long and wonderful journey, he had
also bid farewell to many friends,
shipmates, and extended family members.
He
now has the privilege of joining them
for an unending reunion.
He is survived by his loving and devoted
wife, two sons, and one daughter, seven
grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren,
and three great-great-grandchildren.
Upon his retirement, he and Annie Laurie
settled down in Pensacola, where he
honed his talent as an avid golfer, with
an occasional break to fish, work in his
shop, and the performance of other
husbandly duties as directed by "momma."
Beginning back in 1947, he joined the
Masons (Master twice) and was honored
with a 50 year service award May 24,
1997.
He
was also very active with the York Rite
(presiding officer in all bodies),
Scottish Rite, (Zelica) Grotto, Eastern
Star, (Hadji) Shrine Temple, National
Sojourners, BPOE, Fleet Reserve and MOAA.
In
2008, he and Annie Laurie moved to
Norfolk, VA.
There was a small family memorial and
viewing at the Altmeyer Funeral Home,
Virginia Beach, VA, with a Masonic
farewell ceremony, and eulogy by Rev.
James Sunda of Atlanta, GA.
Interment will be at Arlington National
Cemetery on September 22, 2010.
