Alba
Chance, aged 83, was taken home to Glory
on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at her
daughter's home in Cleveland, Georgia.
Her
daughters were at the house at the time
of her peaceful passing.
Alba
was born in Pensacola on February 2,
1927 to Allison S. and Bessie Mae
Earnest Cobb.
She
and her five siblings were reared in
Pensacola and were graduated from
Pensacola High School. Alba was a member
of the PHS class of 1944.
Alba and her sister, Ruth, were both
married in a double wedding ceremony on
August 23, 1947 at Whitfield Baptist
Church in Pensacola.
Alba
Cobb was married to Fred B. Chance. Both
attended Stetson University in Deland,
Florida and were graduated in 1949.
She
received a Bachelor of Arts degree in
history and English. She and Fred then
moved to Louisville, Kentucky where Alba
taught high school while Fred continued
his education at Southern Baptist
Seminary.
In 1952 they returned to Pensacola where
Fred Chance served as the pastor of
Myrtle Grove Baptist Church for ten
years.
During
this time they had two daughters, René
and Melodie. The family moved to
Sanford, Florida where Rev. Chance was
the pastor at First Baptist Church until
his death in 1971.
Alba
Chance then returned to Stetson
University and earned a Master's degree
in Library Science and worked as a Media
Specialist in the Volusia County School
System until her retirement in 1991.
She
returned to her beloved Pensacola to
live in 2000 where she resided until
2010 when ongoing illness prevented her
from living independently.
Alba was preceded in death by her
husband, Fred B. Chance; her parents,
Allison and Bessie Mae Cobb; and her
brother, David H. Cobb.
She is survived by her two daughters and
their families: Randy and René Chance
Garrett of Clifton, Virginia and Harold
and Melodie Chance Palmer of Cleveland,
Georgia; grandchildren Stetson Lusk,
Bryan and Jeremy Palmer and Joel, Stacey
and Nathan Garrett; great-grandsons
Braxten Palmer and James Garrett; one
sister, Ruth Cobb Arnold and three
brothers, Allison, William, and Lamar
Cobb.
The family will receive friends at
Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel from 5
p.m. until 7 p.m. on Saturday, July
10th, 2010.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on
Sunday, July 11th, 2010 at Harper-Morris
Memorial Chapel with Dr. Al Butler
officiating.
Interment will follow at Bayview
Memorial Park. |
